Man Charged in Road Rage Murder of Mother of Four

Nicholas Hernandez, 24, has been charged in connection with a road rage incident that led to the death of Julie Marie Butcher, 31. Hernandez was arrested on Thanksgiving and accused of fatally shooting Butcher. San Antonio police were called to the scene of a crash at the 6200 block of I-35 and Rittiman Road on Nov. 8. Upon arrival, officers found Butcher in a crashed SUV that had rolled into a ditch. She had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

Police received an anonymous tip from a witness claiming Hernandez confessed to the crime. Additional evidence includes corroborating witness accounts and phone records placing him near the scene before and after the shooting. Hernandez is being held in Bexar County jail with bail set at $250,000.

Butcher leaves behind four children. Her family has set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses and support for her children.

Historic Inn Reopens in South Texas

The Texas Historical Commission recently celebrated the grand reopening of the Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site after completing extensive restoration work on the nearly 200-year-old structure. Originally built as a two-room cedar log cabin in 1834, the inn expanded to 17 rooms by 1850. Located about 30 miles southeast of Bryan/College Station, the Fanthorp Inn was a well-known stop for travelers, including Sam Houston, the first president of the Republic of Texas, who reportedly visited at least 13 times.

Appeals Court Blocks Feds from Cutting Border Razor Wire

Texas achieved another victory in its border security efforts. A federal appeals court ruled on Wednesday that U.S. Border Patrol agents cannot cut the razor wire installed by Texas along sections of the border. In a 2-1 decision, the court issued an injunction preventing agents from cutting the wire near the Rio Grande in Eagle Pass, as reported by the Associated Press.

Gov. Greg Abbott celebrated the ruling, reaffirming Texas’ commitment to securing its border. “MILES of razor wire barriers have been installed at the Texas-Mexico border to deter and repel illegal entry. Despite continued attacks and lawsuits by the Biden-Harris Administration, Texas refused to back down from protecting our state. We WILL hold the line,” he tweeted Thursday.

DPS Traffic Enforcement Efforts Continue

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has extended its increased traffic enforcement initiative through the holiday weekend. Troopers are focusing on seatbelt violations, driving under the influence, speeding, and failure to adhere to the Move Over, Slow Down law, among other offenses.

DPS reminded the public via Twitter that the initiative will remain in effect until Sunday, Dec. 1. “As the holiday comes to an end, please celebrate responsibly,” the department urged. Visit the DPS website for general safety tips and holiday-specific guidance.

‘History in Lights’ Returns to Goliad State Park

Goliad State Park’s annual “History in Lights” exhibit will begin Sunday, Dec. 1, and run nightly throughout December from 6-10 p.m. Visitors will journey through the history of Mission Espiritu Santo, guided by lights and shadows along the same paths once walked by Native Americans and Spanish Franciscan priests.
